Hit Like A Girl Bio:
It was love at first sight. When I was six years old, I spotted a shiny drum set on display at a local music store. My dad, who was with me, saw my interest. I was lucky enough to come home that day with a snare drum and a pair of red sticks! I started lessons and played in every band I could throughout elementary and middle school. My interest for music grew stronger every day. Over the years, I picked up guitar, bass, composing, and audio recording.
At 15, I began studying at the Educational Center for the Arts (ECA), a magnet school for the performing arts in New Haven, CT. Playing each day with other dedicated jazz students under the direction of long time New Haven professionals such as Jessie Hameen II and Jeff Fuller is when I really began to understand what music and drumming is about. I also studied with Bernard Purdie during that time. Music became my passion. Throughout high school I recorded and gigged with Jazz, Latin, Rock, Pop, and other style musicians/bands in the New England area. I also performed, produced, managed, and recorded music with my Jazz/Blues/Funk band, “Lindsay Artkop and Friendsâ€.
I’m now a Scholarship Student at Berklee College of Music. Berklee has been the absolute best opportunity in my life. I’m majoring in Professional Music with a concentration in Drum set Performance, Songwriting, and Music Business. Every day, I play with amazing musicians, teachers and students alike. In this atmosphere, I’ve worked harder and grown faster than I ever thought possible. Some teachers I’ve studied with include Ralph Peterson, Bob Gullotti, Tony “Thunder†Smith, Henrique De Almeida, and Jon Hazilla.
Being selected as one of three female drummers in Berklee’s annual “Women’s Musician Network Concert†in March of this year was an enormous privilege and fantastic experience.
A few months back I was honored to be interviewed and featured in DRUM! Magazine’s “New Blood†Column. (Dec. 2014 issue)
My dream is to play drums professionally for touring acts, and to record in all types of studio situations. Some of my inspirations include Terri Lyne Carrington, Elvin Jones, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Jordan, JoJo Mayer, Steve Gadd, Aaron Spears, and Kim Thompson.
“Hit Like a Girl “is such an amazing opportunity. It has made it possible for so many talented female drummers to showcase how they “Hit Like A Girlâ€. Thank you.
