There are many steps in the recruitment process to complete prior to bringing a candidate in for face-to-face interview.
But for the purpose of this video I'd like to discuss effective interview questioning that will assist in maximising your time with the candidate.
First remember, an interview is two-way.
This quality candidate is making a decision on whether your opportunity is the right one for them.
As much as you are assessing their suitability for your role.
So time-manage your interview. Discuss with the candidate that the first part of the interview will be to explore his or her fit to the role.
However, you will also leave time for exploring the position responsibilities and the benefits of working for your organisation and answering any questions.
Also, use an interview template and a standardized assessment form so you accurately assess candidates against the criteria of the role and against each other.
We've provided an example; feel free to download by clicking the link below.
There are varied types of interview questions. Open, clarifying questions; the where, why, what questions are good to start with for interview context. However it is important to include BDI questions - behavioural descriptive interviewing. These questions usually start with "give me example of a time when..."; as past behaviour is indicative of future behaviour.
Drill down into the details of the candidate's examples as it is difficult to falsify information the more deeply you investigate a past experience. We also ask the candidate to break down previous roles into percentages. For example: "thank you John for providing your responsibilities in detail while you were at the bank. However, could you break that role up into percentages? Where did you spend most of your time?
This is a great question as bid writing could be one of John's responsibilities but he actually only spent 10% of his time in this function and if you're recruiting him for a bid writing role then it is important you know this information. This is only one of many essential questions in conducting a great interview. We've also included a list of 20 best questions in the download link.
Selecting the right candidate is key to growth and success of your organisation. Asking great questions in only one piece of the puzzle.
