Nearly in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, just off the shores of the island of Pico in the Azores, Portugal divers captured some amazing images of some beautiful blue sharks,
These brave divers got up close and personal with these sometimes dangerous fish. Blue sharks can grow very big to almost 13 feet long and weigh over 800 pounds. Since 2009 there have been 13 shark attacks on humans resulting in 4 deaths which ranks blue sharks 5th on the human kill list behind the Great White, Tiger, Bull and Sand Tiger sharks.
Blue sharks are generally harmless to humans as they normally feed on small fish, squid and dead marine life. Known as the wolves of the sea, these sharks will travel in packs and can be found just about all over the world.
There are over 10 million sharks of this species killed every year by fisherman as they are popular for game fishing because of their beauty and speed. While they meat is edible, it isn't very tasty but their liver is used for oil, their skin for leather and their fins.. of course, for shark fin soup.
They are currently listed as a "near threatened species" by marine biologists.
