In 2008 as part of my HND Television course, my class were given the opportunity to film an event showcasing the mysterious Mitchell Hedges skull, notable for appearing in the latest installment of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. We filmed a large conference event using three large PD400 DVC Pro cameras with a small team carrying vox pops outside in the main hallway of the Hub on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, United Kingdom.
We also filmed a strange crystal healing ritual where everyone sat on chairs within a hall where the crystal skulls was positioned in the centre of the room. It is said that the sound of the healing crystal music can cure headaches and the quartz crystal skull creates positive energy. I have to admit I felt that it wouldn't work but it did seem to have some effect on how I felt, spooky!
There are many Mayan crystal skulls throughout the world which are human skulls, also known as hardstone carvings. They are not like the skulls used in Indiana Jones which wasn't human. They are said to be made of milky crystal quartz also known as rock crystals. Their origins take us back to pre-Columbian Meosoamerica. Scientists believe the crystal skulls mystery artifacts were created in the mid 19th century onwards and originate from Europe.
Although there are myths and rumours of magical abilities, these claims do not surface in the accounts of Native American mythologies and spiritual theories.
The skull on display at this event we filmed was the Mitchell Hedges Skull. It is known widely for being the most famous skull dating back to 1924 when it was discovered by Anna Le Guillion Mitchell Hedges. Anna was the adopted daughter of British adventurer and author F.A. Mitchell Hedges. A video documentary was created in 1990 called the Crystal Skull of Lubaantun.
A letter from 1970 revealed that Anna had been told by some of the remaining Mayan culture that the crystal skull was used by the High Priest to initiate death according to Maya history. It's because of this history of Mayan culture that the skull gets it's title, The Skull of Doom. Anna went on tour with the Mayans history skull from 1967 displaying it wile charging people to watch it. She gave interviews about the Mayan history artifact until she died in 2007.
The Crystal Skull had been constructed from a block of clear quartz. The lower jaw section is detached. Frank Dorland, a freelance art restorer commented on the artifact stating that the skull had been carved with without using metal tools used at the time? He went on to state that he could not find any scratch marks apart from some mechanical grinding on the teeth. He suggested that it was firstly constructed using diamonds. He pointed out that he thought it was sanded over a period of 150 to 300 years and he believed it could also have been 12,000 years old.
Another strange point of discussion is that the skull remains a current temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.
Many people around the world believe that the skull produces a number of miracles such as causing visions, curing cancer and abilities to kill a man. There are also claims that the skull can heal people although all of these claims have not been backed by any scientific proof.
A scary belief relating to the legend of the 2012 crystal skulls is that with the completion of the current Mayan calendar history b'ak'tun cycle on December 21st, 2012, if the thirteen mystical skulls are re-united then a catastrophe will occur. This Mayan Civilization history claim also appeared on a programme on Discovery channel called Mystery of the Crystal Skull.
By the 1970s, the crystal skulls had entered New Age mythology as potent relics of ancient Atlantis, and they even acquired a canonical number: there were exactly thirteen skulls.
