When Rihanna’s “Work†came out, no one could understand what she was saying. But it’s Patois. And it makes sense to me. But regardless, people don’t get it. So when Ariana Grande did the impression of it, she totally mocked the lyrics and did a funny dance to it. The Italian-background singer later mocked herself for people not understand what she says either. “Break Free†was critically received as grammatically incorrect with unintelligible lyrics. But it’s a banger.
Anyway, without reading too deeply into Ariana Grande’s impersonation of Rihanna’s “Work†ft Drake, it was OK for her to do this because it was self deprecating in a way.
She also did a number of other impressions that did the original singer’s justice. Her Celine Dion impression was spot on. Completely knocking the french Canadian accent with her dramatic, theatrical vocals right out of the park.
The “Focus On Me†singer did a Whitney Houston impression that really showcased her vocal range. It was very high and she hit all the notes unbelievably. Then she took it back down with a Shakira “Whenever, Wherever†impression. I always knew Ariana Grande could hit her high notes, but I had no idea she can sing really deep like that. She definitely is fit for broadway, where she got her start.
She also gave a lot of humour interjected in between. When asked if she liked Airana Grande she responded.
She also gave a sly remark about how people can’t understand what she’s saying, similar to Rihanna’s work, which is Patois.
I also thought it was really funny that even after proving that she’s so talented, she’s still treated like an intern.
I can relate.
