caught on dashcam - car crash and flip off the side of a mountain - angeles crest highway
Bookmarked 515 weeks ago jukin media verified original for licensing permission to use: contact - licensingatjukinmediadotcomto follow updates with what i039m working on now follow my instagram: http:wwwinstagramcomjshaw6000one year ago today i almost died here is the video of the incidenti039m primarily posting this in an attempt to help others learn from my mistakes this is a reminder to be safe pay attention and know the road before you try to enjoy it i failed on all 3 of those accounts and it nearly cost me my lifepart of the story i posted last year on my facebook here is the full story since youtube039s character limit unfortunately doesn039t allow me to post the full thing: http:justpasteitq79c shortened story below:sunday jan 4 2015 i received a second chance at lifewhat happened to put it simply i was going faster than i should have been and got distracted at the one moment that required 110 focus on an unfamiliar roadas an auto enthusiast when you have a nice relatively fast car with a loud exhaust you tend to like tunnels they make your exhaust sound that much better sort of like singing in the shower well i found myself accelerating through this nice long and dark pair of tunnels i had done this many times before in other tunnels at the exit i could barely see because it was so bright a person standing and holding something while motioning wondering what they were doing i stared and stared reaching the top of 4th gear all while trying to comprehend what they were trying to tell me then i figured it out they were telling me to slow down and watch the curve ahead but it was too late when i think about it now i dont ever remember seeing the road ahead until i was nearly out of the tunnel in my mind i had assumed that it just went straight at that point i was exiting the tunnel straight as the road curved to the left i had no time to slam on my brakes beforehand realizing i was going way too fast for that section i applied the brakes softly in an effort to keep the back end from sliding out but combined with a bump and rough switch in surface texture from concrete to asphalt i lost traction i began sliding to the left the car oversteering rotating counter-clockwise over the center marker i counter-steered turning the steering wheel all the way to the right but kept sliding to the left into the turnout it was at this moment i knew i had fucked upi slammed into a berm and expected to come to a complete stop but the terrifying journey wasnt over i went over the edge it happened so fast all i can remember is everything crashing and spinning i thought i was rolling over down the side of the mountain i was confident i was going to land upside down and get crushed i was on the world039s worst roller coaster that could only end with death or so i thought i came to a stop still yelling not fully comprehending what just happened or how far down the mountain i was and that i actually just crashed my car luckily for me i landed on a rock wall that was part of a drainage pipe that went through the mountain it was the only horizontally level piece on an extremely steep sloped hill had i spun off a few feet before or after id be deadi never thought that i would be one of the guys that wrecks his car in the canyons im not even close to being a pro driver but at least before the accident i took just slight pride in my situational awareness while driving my somewhat decent understanding of vehicle dynamics and how various driver inputs affect a vehicle in motion my autocross and canyon experience and the fact that i havent gotten any tickets or into any accidents since i got my license for what it039s worth i messed up i got too comfortable at the wrong moment and it got the best of me it shows that things like this can happen to mostly anyone the whole cruise up there was relaxed leisurely until that moment i definitely wasnt purposely trying to take that corner fast i was caught up in the moment flying through those long tunnels got distracted and didnt see the road ahead of me i panicked last minute and that ultimately lead to this entire situation im disappointed in myself and i know some others may be disappointed in me as well and i know it could have been worse in so many ways and im kicking myself for that but ultimately im glad to be alive and well and that i did not involve others in the wreckcar is a 2004 subaru forester xt |

national briefing by yanis varoufakis minister of finance of greece after the 1st meeting session
Bookmarked 542 weeks ago en - national briefing by yanis varoufakis minister of finance of greece after the first session of the extraordinary eurogroup meeting - part in english - 27062015 - eurogroupcouncil justus lipsius building brusselsyanis varoufakis: quottoday039s eurogroup meeting discussed the latest developments on greece we explained to my colleagues why we could not accept the institutions039 proposal 2 days ago briefly it had to do with 3 fundamental issues:-the 1st one was that the prior actions recommended were seriously recessionary and redistributing burdens from those who could and should pay them to those who neither could nor should-the 2nd reason concerned the financing the proposal for financing the 5-month extension period of the calendar agreement the funding proposal that was on the table by the institutions was technically inadequate the numbers simply did not add up and when we asked questions about in particular the utilization of parts of the hfsf 109 bln which was there to recapitalize banks and to strengthen them received an answer that involved the asm and that as we know effectively backed into this short-term arrangement a new programme: both technically and legally that did not make much sense and i am sure that other member states would have a problem with it germany in particular-thirdly and most importantly what was proposed to us did not contain any plan for givinginstilling hope in investors both greek and non-greek in consumers in depositors that this 5-month period that was recommended proposed to us would be a period of consolidation and a period of overcoming the crisis instead it was punctuated by 1 review after the other every few weeks leading to an end sometime in november december without anything in sight that instilled confidence in anyone that wouldn039t be exactly the same negotiation again with a threat of impasse deterring through backward deduction today investors from doing what greece needs which is to invest i reminded my colleagues that we were elected on the basis of a 36 vote collectively our government scored something just over 40 for a momentum decision like that we believe that 50 plus one is the minimum that is necessary we explained to our partners also that this government is absolutely determined to find a solution and accommodation with our partners that the greek people on july 5th will be asked to agree or not to agree with the institutions039 proposal that leaves open the possibility of negotiations through the night and the day and the night and the day ahead of us that would improve the institutions039 proposal in which case our government039s recommendation would change yanis varoufakis then explains: quotthe real reason ladies amp gentlemen why we are finding ourselves in this impasse quot during 2 minutes frdrick moulin 2015 - eu2015 - eurogroupcouncil - all rights reserved |

tesla model s adaptive cruise control crashes into van
Bookmarked 494 weeks ago just to make it clear: the tesla model s is the absolute best car in the world at the moment nothing comes closebut in this case there was a problem with the driving aids and also security systems: none of the safety-systems worked correctly:1 the tacc active cruise control did not brake as it normally does2 the automatic braking system aeb did not make an emergency brake3 the forward collision warning turned on way too late it was set to normal warning distance4 the tacc actually was speeding up just before i did hit the brakesyes i could have reacted sooner but when the car slows down correctly 1039000 times you trust it to do it the next time to my badi was looking right to find a spot to merge and did not realize soon enough that the tacc was accelerating towards the van so my reaction was too slow because of that it takes a second to realize that the system is failing and you have to take overin normal operation the ap slows down as soon as another car puts one wheel |

tim harford: what prison camps can teach you about the economy
Bookmarked 591 weeks ago don039t miss new big think videos subscribe by clicking here: http:googlcptsv5economist tim harford explain the micro-economies of prison camps and babysitting coops even in these simple systems problems manifest that have macroeconomic analogs harford039s latest book is the undercover economist strikes back: http:googlp7p2yvtranscript: when we039re thinking about how economies work the tricky thing is that they039re systems and you look at any particular corner of the system and you039re gonna miss the big picture but the big picture039s complicated really complicated so what i wanted to try to do was to find examples of simple economic systems -- systems that were simple enough you could see all the moving parts working and you could understand how recessions worked and there were a couple of examples that i found one is not so famous it039s an example of a recession in a prison camp and the other is a lot more famous because paul krugman039s talked about it and that039s a babysitting co-op recession now these aren039t hypothetical examples these aren039t kind of you know textbook imaginary things these recessions actually happened and in the case of the babysitting co-op recession it was capitol hill washington dc the late 1970s it was written up in a learned journal and what happened was parents who joined this babysitting circle -- there were about 400 of them they were trying to keep track of who was looking after who039s kids and it039s difficult to keep all that straight on a spreadsheet and remember this is the seventies so you don039t have microsoft excel so they had these little tokens and they039d pass these tokens around and if you looked after somebody039s children then you would be given a token and then when you wanted someone to look after your children you039d give them a token so they had this currency and that039s great except what happened was when people who joined the babysitting co-op they were given these tokens and they didn039t have quite enough not enough babysitting could be bought with what they had so they thought to themselves why don039t i go and babysit for somebody else a few times and then i039ll have a good stack of these tokens and then once i have a good stack of these tokens then i039ll start going out myself and hiring babysitters the trouble is everybody in the babysitting co-op was doing exactly this and if everybody in the babysitting co-op was doing exactly this then no one039s able to get a job babysitting because everyone039s just trying to work for everyone else now there are a number of possible solutions to this one is that people would just agree hey this token that we039ve got that039s worth an hour039s babysitting let039s say it039s worth two hours babysitting let039s say you could buy twice as much babysitting with this token and that could potentially solve the problem but that039s not what people did people i think felt uncomfortable renegotiating the contract so a second thing you could do and they tried this was to legislate how often people had to go out so they came up with this rule that people had to go out at least twice a year now i don039t have a really hectic social life you know i039ve got three children i039m an economist you know i don039t go out that much but you know even i think that going out twice a year is not that much and if that039s your baseline that039s gonna kick start the babysitting economy you have a problem in the end the babysitting recession committee or the babysitting committee solved the problem by simply issuing more of this currency they printed more of these little tokens they handed more out they handed more out to people when they arrived they took fewer away from people when they left the babysitting co-op and that worked beautifully that kick started the whole thing and this massive long lasting recession suddenly evaporated which is great then they printed too many they had a hyperinflation problem and the economy crashed again but that just goes to show it039s not easy to run an economydirectedproduced by jonathan fowler elizabeth rodd and dillon fitton |
