how a million pound 747-8 tests it039s brakes
Bookmarked 510 weeks ago gizmodo amp jalopnik quotwatch this amazing video of what happens when boeing wants to make sure the carbon ceramic brakes on its new boeing 747-8 work under the worst possible conditions specifically boeing has to simulate the worst possible conditions: a rejected take-off with no reverse thrusters on worn-out brakes the result red-hot 2552 degree brakes yowchboeing039s 747-8 is the latest and most economical version of company039s popular jumbo jet as part of the testing procedure they have to put a maximum load on the landing gear to make sure it039ll hold up in an emergencyto simulate the worst case scenario the aircraft is fully fueled to the maximum weight about 975k pounds the brakes are worn down 100 and a pilot is told to accelerate to a takeoff speed of 200 mph and then slam on the completely toasted brakes as if it were part of an aborted takeoffnormally the pilot would try to use reverse thrust to stop the plane and fire crews would be on hand within three minutes to start putting out the fire in this experiment they assume the thrusters don039t work and the fire crews are a full five minutes awaythe result it stopped about 700 feet short of the estimated length as the brakes glowed under the 1400c 2552f heatquotwwwgizmodocomwwwjalopnikcom |

primitive technology: reusable charcoal mound
Bookmarked 441 weeks ago charcoal is a valuable fuel that reaches a higher temperature than the very wood its made from ive made some before but with supplies running low due to furnace experiments i decided to make another large batch of charcoal in a mound i stacked the wood into a roughly conical shape about 1 m wide and 75 cm high and then built a thick wall of mud around the heap this took 6 hours eight air entries were made in the base of the mound and one air exit hole was left at the top of the mound to allow the volatile components of the wood to escape while creating a natural draft to keep everything burning the mound was lit and the flame burned backwards down the heap in the opposite direction to the draft this protects the coal made above the level of the fire from burning as carbon dioxide rushes past instead of oxygen preventing combustion of charcoal each air entry was sealed only when fire became visible through them this is an easy way to tell when to close them up ie when the fire had burne |

building a tiled roof hut
Bookmarked 534 weeks ago i built this tiled roof hut in the bush using only primitive tools and materials the tools i used have been made in my previous videos it should be pointed out that i do not live in the wild and that this is just a hobby it should be obvious to most that this is not a survival shelter but an experiment in primitive building technologyto cut and carve wood i used the celt stone axe and stone chisel made in this video https:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=bn-34jfurhy to carry water and make fire i used pots and fire sticks made in this video https:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=nckkhqlx9de finally to store fire wood and dry unfired tiles i used the wood shed built in this video https:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=zajpkwdeeyg the wooden frame was built with a 2x2m floor plan and a 2m tall ridge line with 1m tall side walls 6 posts were put into the ground 025 m deep the 3 horizontal roof beams were attached to these using mortise and tenon joints carved with a stone chisel the rest of the frame was lashed together with lawyer cane strips the frame swayed a little when pushed so later triangular bracing was added to stop this also when the mud wall was built it enveloped the posts and stopped them moving altogethera small kiln was built of mud from the ground and a perforated floor of clay from the creek bank tiles were made from clay pressed into rectangular moulds made from strips of lawyer cane 20 tiles were fired at a time 450 flat tiles and 15 curved ridge tiles were made with only a few breakages 26 firings were done in all and the average firing took about 4 hours the fired tiles were then hooked over the horizontal roof battensan underfloor heating system was built into one side of the hut to act as a sittingsleeping platform in cold weather this was inspired by the korean ondol or hot stone a trench was dug and covered with flat stones with a firebox at one end and a chimney at the other for draft the flames travelled beneath the floor heating it after firing it for a while the stones stay warm all night with heat conducted directly to the sleeping occupant and radiating into the roomthe wall was made of clayey mud and stone a stone footing was laid down and over this a wall of mud was built to save on mud stones were included into later wall courses the mud was dug from a pit in front of the hut and left a large hole with a volume of about 25 cubic metres the finished hut has a swinging door made of sticks the inside is dark so i made a torch from tree resin a broken tile with resin on it acts as a small lamp producing a lot of light and little smoke the end product was a solid little hut that should be fire and rot resistant the whole project took 102 days but would have taken 66 days were it not for unseasonal rain for a more in depth description see my blog https:primitivetechnologywordpresscom |

the dakota fire hole - stealth fire
Bookmarked 531 weeks ago what if i told you that you could make a fire that only you could see any passers-by will be totally oblivious to the presence of you and your fire if you want to get into stealth camping build a fire during gale force winds or just want to lay low then the 039dakota fire hole039 is just what you need first things first you039ll need to dig a pretty deep hole about 2 to 3 feet deep is a good standard but the bigger the fire you039re planning to build the deeper and wider you039ll have to dig so its ultimately up to your discretion i039ll be making a small personal fire so i039ll go 2 foot deep and 15 feet wideas long as you go balls deep and don039t be a bitch about it you can get the hole dug in 5 minutes flat i would suggest using some form of entrenching tool you can use a stick and your bare hands but that will take significantly longer and you039ll probably want to kill yourself halfway through out of frustration now step 2 you039ll need to dig a smaller hole about 1 foot away from the first hole you don039t need to dig as deep for this one but a depth of 15 feet is a best practice this hole will connect to the primary hole via a tunnel the purpose of this secondary hole and tunnel is to allow oxygen to flow into the fire as the heat and flames of spewing out of the bigger hole won039t allow any oxygen to enter from above this secondary hole also allows you to blow oxygen into the fire yourself with your breath without risking burning your eyebrows off if you chose to do that over the primary hole keep tunneling your way through until you reach the other sidebut don039t stop there keep digging away at the edges until its big enough for you to fit your arm through like a cheap hooker the bigger the tunnel the more oxygen that can enter meaning a more sustainable firenow that039s all done it039s time to build a fire the same practices of traditional fire making still apply a raised wooden platform to keep your fire off the ground which will burn down into a layer of embers over time utilize dead dry materials that have been hanging above the ground y039all already know the deal make the fire as you would make it on the surface you can fiddle about with the structure of the fire in anyway you see fit make a tipi a perimeter a log cabin build sup to you man if you want to cook over this type of fire then it039s just a simple matter of placing thick living green branches either over the top of the hole or jam them into the side of the walls living green materials won039t burn over the fire so your cookware will be safe to rest upon itthere039s a common misconception that these types of underground fires produce no smoke this isn039t strictly true an underground fire does hotter and more intensely than one that039s exposed to a colder atmosphere on the surface and that does limit its smoke emissions there039s a lot of chemistry involved in explaining why that is so i039ll save that for another video don039t want to go too off track here but if we refer back to the list of smoke generators i included in my signal and rescue video wet materials resinous and green materials will still produce smoke so it039s best to utilize the driest and deadest possible materials you can find if you really want to limit your visibility the smokeless fire pit comes from a rather unique way of building fire we think of fire building as a bottom up process we build a base fire and then add material on top of it for a smokeless fire we need to flip things upside down and have our fuelwood on the bottom with our fire on top the fire on top is started with copious amounts of kindling constantly fed with dry small twigs and dry wood shavings directly on top of the fire which will burn the large pieces of fuelwood below the reason this produces no smoke is because as the air flow from the secondary hole works its way up through the fuel wood it pushes all the gases and vapors which we call smoke which come from the moisture resins and oils contained within the fuelwood the air pushes it up into the hot flames where it burns off because of the heat intensity of underground flames if those gases and vapors didn039t have to travel upwards through the flame like in a traditional fire then you would have a smokey fire when you039re done be a gent and fill the hole back up no need to break people039s ankles as they pass on by in the future peace bros if you desire then you can pack all of the mud you039ve dug up on to the outskirts of your hole to give yourself a large wall to help you conceal the tips of your flames if they ever reach high enough to emerge out of the hole ------------------------------------outdoor skills for wilderness survival bushcraft hiking and recreational campingtwitter: wwwtwittercomalfieaestheticsfacebook: wwwfacebookcomalfietheaestheticgoogle: wwwplusgooglecomalfieaesthetics |
