fukushima - did we almost lose tokyo
Bookmarked 715 weeks ago kevin kamps beyond nuclear joins thom hartmann in a little over a week - we039ll hit the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear crisis at fukushima in japan and this week - we039re learning that that nuclear crisis is even worse than was originally thought on wednesday - japanese scientists announced that twice as much radioactive cesium than estimated blew out of the plant after the earthquake and tsunami that039s about 40000 trillion bequerels and it took just 18 days for those radioactive particles to encircle the planet - turning up in places as far away as vermont french scientists are now calling on japan to remain vigilant in its inspections of fruit milk and game to prevent further radiation contamination these new numbers come on the heels of a greenpeace report on the fukushima disaster - in which the organization places the blame for the crisis - not on the natural disaster - but instead on the japanese government the report accuses the japanese government of ignoring the risks posed to fukushima before the earthquake and quotcutting corners to protect profits over peoplequot it goes on to argues that nuclear energy is quotinherently unsafequot and governments are too quick to approve nuclear power plants while at the same time unable to the consequences of nuclear disasters that includes the united states currently - there are 23 general electric mark 1 reactors in operation around the united states the mark 1 is the same reactor design used at fukushima and just last month - the nuclear regulatory commission issued a warning to 96 nuclear reactors around the nation that sit on fault lines - urging operators to perform new stress tests to see if the reactor can hold up to earthquake so what should we make of all this |

if america is swimming in oil - why are gas pumps guzzling all your
Bookmarked 715 weeks ago with the economy improving - republicans have started attacking president obama about rising gas prices some forecasts show gas prices hitting five dollars a gallon this summer - and the right wants you to belive that high prices have something to do with president obama039s rejection of the keystone pipeline - or maybe his refusal to expand drilling in alaska - or just his downright hatred of america they want you to belive that the united states has a shortage of oil - and that if the president were to just drill baby drill - then prices will plummet but that039s not true it039s not even close to true the united states isn039t short on oil - it039s awash in oil in fact - we have so much oil that we039re getting rid of much of it by shipping it overseas as bloomberg reported yesterdayfor the first since 1949 - that039s 62 years - the united states is now a net-exporter of oil products that means we shipped more oil products out to places in south america europe and asia - than we imported in from around the world in fact - every single day in 2011 - oil corporations ship about 460000 more barrels of oil out of the country than were imported into the country that day so if gas prices are rising because supplies in the us have dropped - then why are we getting rid of so much of it by exporting it it039s because the president can039t legally tell multi-billion dollar transnational oil corporations where to sell their oil and these corporations don039t give a damn about gas supplies in the united states - because they039re getting a way better deal taking their oil and selling it elsewhere and that039s what they039re doing - and that039s why they wanted the keystone pipeline |

geeky science quotyou039re such a pigquot has new meaning
Bookmarked 715 weeks ago lets get geeked out on some science new research suggests that methycillin resistant staphyloccus aureus - better known as the highly antibiotic resistant superbug mersa - the flesh-eating bacteria that has killed so many people - may have evolved its defenses to antibiotics on a factory farm a paper published by the american society for microbiology lays out how a human strain of mersa was originally drug-defeatable - but then transferred into a pig population where it developed its resistance to antibiotics - and bounced back into the human population like most forms of livestock - pigs are often fed antibiotics to help them grow faster and prevent the infections that come with the crowding and horrible conditions in factory farms as a result - any infection they may have - like mersa - becomes immune to the high levels of antibiotics in their systems the fact that pigs have played a role in creating a human superbug shouldn039t come as any surprise considering pigs and humans are biologically quite similar until a human insulin drug was made in 1978 - pig insulin was routinely used to treat diabetes in humans new studies also suggest that implanting embryonic pig insulin cells in diabetes patients may help them produce their own insulin hypothyroidism - one of the most common health ailments in women - is often treated with help from a hormone extracted from pig thyroid glands but the similarities between man and pig don039t stop thereresearchers have even been able to produce pigs that were able to generate human blood cells by injecting human blood stem cells into pig fetuses similarly - scientists have also suggested that human organs could be grown inside pigs for use in transplant surgeries all of which highlights how insane it is to use factory farm techniques - where animals live in tiny pens soaked in their own excrement unable to move or ever see sunlight - all the while being injected with hormones and antibiotics peta is right about the cruelty and inhumanity of this kind of behavior toward our fellow mammals - and if we keep it up we may well start seeing epidemics of killer bugs that no antibiotic can treat - effectively throwing us back to the 19th century when it comes to dealing with infectious diseases |

should we ditch the shoot to kill law
Bookmarked 712 weeks ago a man with a history of violence against police was legally issued a gun and used it to murder a harmless teen how is this allowed to happen in american society today since this koch brother039s alec-endorsed nra-inspired law was signed by jeb bush the quotjustifable homicidequot rate in florida has more than tripled so isn039t it time we rethink these infamous quotlicense to killquot laws so we can prevent more murders and better yet - shouldn039t we be asking ourselves how a man who was previously arrested for violence and battery against a cop was able to get a gun at all while trayvon martin039s death is a tragedy - we don039t have to let him die in vainit039s time we stopped the needless crime that plagues america039s streets - and enact tougher gun control legislation that will prevent deaths like trayvon039s from ever occuring again joining thom hartmann to discuss the case is josh horwitz executive director of the national coalition to stop gun violence and john manuelian a pro-nra criminal defense attorney |
