The term marathon comes from a Greek legend about a messenger who ran 25 miles from the city Marathon to Athens to report a significant military victory.
The first organized marathon took place in the 1896 Athens Olympics.
The race remained close to 25 miles in length until the 1908 Olympic Games in London. The queen wanted the race to start on the lawn at Windsor Castle and end at the Olympic stadium, a distance totaling 26.2 miles. The length of 26.2 miles has stuck ever since.
