They're former federal scientist who worked for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, but police say they had a mission to transport harmful vials of live bacteria to China. That bacteria, brucella, is not only harmful to animals but also poses a threat to humans The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Klaus Nielson back in October and issued a search warrant for Yu Wie Ling but only made it public Wednesday.
Brucella is classified as a bioterriosm agent because it is highly infectious. There is no vaccine for humans.
Police say the two attempted to illegally commercialize Canadian Food Inspection Agency research. Experts say brucellosis causes abortions and infertility in cattle and other animals.
A spokeswoman for the CFIA could not say when the two researchers left the agency, and the RCMP remains tight lipped on the investigation. But scientists acknowledge the bacteria are threatening.
Both are being charged with breach of trust by a public officer. Dr. Nielsen also faces several charges under the Export and Import Permits Act, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act. Dr. Nielsen, is free and has received a summons to appear in court on April. Ling is believed to be in China.
