More than a dozen mortar shells hit al-Baramkeh and Kafarsouseh areas in the Syrian capital Damascus. The shells killed a number of civilians and injured others, among them women and children. Apartments, shops and vehicles were heavily damaged as a result. Tishreen sports city also suffered losses as one of the mortars hit a swimming pool. The residents of the neighborhoods condemned such attacks carried out by foreign-backed militants.
Experts say insurgents launch such attacks to undermine security after failing to take over the city.
The militants' strategy is to smuggle the mortar launchers into the city in order to have the city center in their range of fire. According to media reports, launchers are believed to be set in Old Kafarsouseh area. Similar attacks claimed the lives of many civilians. The latest one killed a number of Damascus university students in the café of the faculty of architectural engineering.
It has become a depressing fact for the Syrians that there is no safe street in the Syrian capital anymore because of the mortars raining on the city. The truth remains that the Syrian civilians are the ones paying the price of the conflict.
