Referred pain, also called reflective pain, is pain perceived at a location other than the site of the painful stimulus. An example is the case of angina pectoris brought on by a myocardial infarction (heart attack), where the pain is often felt in the neck, shoulders, and back rather than in the thorax (chest), the site of the injury.
The other day, I received a letter from one of my patients who asked, "Why does my doctor tell me that my pain is in my back when my pain is actually in my leg?"
The way I often explain this is if the lights go out at your house, the issue may not be at your house, but could be at the powerplant many miles away. You can try fixing the lights at your house all you want, but it will not work. You must fix the problem at the powerplant.
