On Tuesday the 12th of July 2016, a decision was made by SANParks, MTPA, and Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary NPC management to dehorn all rhinos at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary due to the on-going national poaching crisis, and a number of serious poaching threats that were received at the non-profit organisation. As rhino horn is made up primarily of keratin, the protein found in hair and nails, the removal of the horn is not painful to the animal, and regrows in much the same way. It is also important to note that, contrary to many cultural beliefs, rhino horn does not have any medicinal properties. The dehorning procedure is routinely performed on rhinos in captivity, and has proven over time to be one of the most effective techniques in the relentless fight against rhino poaching.
