Joe gives more information on DuraVent DuraPlus Flashing.
The purpose of the roof flashing is to weatherproof the roof where the chimney penetrates the roof. The flashing gets tucked under the shingles and the shingles are cut around the flashing if needed. The flashing is sealed to the roof with silicone to provide that needed seal to prevent water from getting under the flashing and getting into the attic or house, then a storm collar is placed over the flashing and sealed to the chimney pipe with a high temp silicone to prevent water from running down the chimney.
The most important part of selecting the correct size flashing is making sure it is made for the pitch of your roof. The pitch, or slope, of a roof is expressed as the distance a roof raises vertically over a 12-inch horizontal distance. So a roof that rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally has a 6/12 pitch. To determine your roof pitch you will need a level and a tape measure.
Hold your level against the roof then raise it until the level bubble is in the center and the level is level. Then take the measurement at the 12 inch spot on the level and down to the chimney. This measurement is what the pitch will be, in our example it is 5 1/2 inches so the roof pitch would be 5 1/2 / 12 pitch. For more information on how to measure your roof pitch:
