Jerry Seinfeld sat down with NBC Nightly News where he revealed that he struggles with social engagement and explained why he believes he might have a form of autism.
'I think I'm on the autism spectrum': Jerry Seinfeld reveals struggles with social engagement
Actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld believes he is on the autism spectrum, he revealed in an interview on Thursday night.
The 60-year-old star said he finds social engagement difficult and struggles to read meaning from people's facial expressions and body language.
Seinfeld - who is married with three children - was speaking on the NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams show.
He told the host: 'I think, on a very drawn out scale, I think I'm on the spectrum.'
When questioned further about his revelation, Seinfeld explained he is 'never paying attention to the right things'.
He said: 'Basic social engagement is really a struggle. I'm very literal. When people talk to me and they use expressions, sometimes I don't know what they're saying.'
But rather than viewing himself as dysfunctional, the comic instead described his condition as an 'alternate mindset'.
The actor - who has an estimated net worth of a staggering $820m - is most famous for his self-titled role in Nineties sitcom Seinfeld in which he played a semi-fictional version of himself.
He is married to Jessica, 43, and they live in New York with their three children, daughter Sascha, who turned 14 on Friday, and two sons, Julian Kal, 11, and Shepherd Kellen, aged nine.
Jerry and Jessica married on Christmas day in 1999 in the wake of much public scrutiny following Jessica's split from first husband Robert Nederlander, who filed for divorce after just four months.
Jessica insisted Jerry was not the cause of the break-up, but in a 2004 family photoshoot with Vogue magazine said he was there for her at a time of 'desperate need'.
Jerry, who had previously had a long term relationship with 17-year-old high school student Shoshanna Lonstein when he was in his late 30s, told the publication that Jessica saved his life.
He said: 'If it wasn't for Jess and the kids, I'd really blow my brains out. Jessica saved my life. She gave me something to care about.'
In 2012 Jerry revealed he was a long-time devotee of Transcendental Meditation, which is performed for 20 minutes twice a day.
The technique is credited with reducing stress, anxiety and fatigue and promotes a balanced functioning of the mind and body.
Seinfeld also talked about his new web series during the interview with Williams.
The comic is starring in Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee where he interviews people in the industry.
He said: 'I wanted to see if I could capture it and show people, "look at this group of people, aren’t they unusual and isn’t it unusual how all these different people who do this thing are kind of the same".
'They are the only kind of people that I feel completely relaxed around.'
