About me: Get a free official translation of your
certificate
Before ordering a sworn translation, check if you
can get a free official translation. The quote can
be much cheaper than you expect if you request
multilingual or international certificates for
certain documents.
free certified official translation
No need to ask the Three Wise Men for a free
translation, the European Union encourages the
creation and use of international documents to
facilitate the mobility of its citizens. In
matters of civil status, you can obtain a free
multilingual or international certificate at the
Civil Registry. Such certificates are valid in
most cases and do not require translation (because
they are already in multilingual format), nor
apostille.
Some time ago I went to work in Paris and in order
for my company to register me with the French
social security I needed an official French
translation of my birth certificate, so I
requested a free multilingual extract of my birth
certificate from the civil registry. You can even
order it online and they will send it to your home
for free. It is important not to confuse it with
the bilingual certificate, as it is written in
Spanish and another co-official language of
Spain.
You have all the information on the website of the
Spanish Ministry of Justice. The types of free
international certificates that can be obtained
are:
Birth certificate
Marriage certificate
Death certificate
However, you should always ask the destination
agency if the presentation of a multilingual or
international extract is sufficient, since in some
cases a literal certification is required.
Multilingual extracts do not include a translation
of the notes in the margins of the certificates.
Therefore, if these notes are important for the
procedures to be carried out, it will be necessary
to order a sworn translation of the verbatim
certificate.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the
international or multilingual certificate is
effective in countries that have ratified the
Vienna Convention of September 8, 1976. This
certificate is issued in the official language of
the following countries: Spain, Germany, Austria,
Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg,
Holland, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Slovenia,
Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Poland,
Montenegro, Moldova, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania
and Bulgaria. Therefore, if you are going to
present your certificate in England or in the
United States, you will need a sworn translation
into English.
The same applies the other way around, i.e., the
signatory countries of this agreement may issue
multilingual or international certificates for
presentation in Spain.
In France, to obtain a birth certificate, a
marriage certificate or a death certificate in
multilingual format (there is a box at the end
with the translation), you must request it from
the town hall. You can find all the information on
how to obtain your international certificate on
the official website of the French administration.
However, many French people prefer to pay to
receive a sworn translation from French to Spanish
of their certificate, as it is usually easier and
faster than requesting a multilingual certificate
from the French administration.
On the other hand, after getting married in the
USA, I had to submit to the Central Civil Registry
in Madrid a sworn translation from English to
Spanish of my apostilled marriage certificate. The
Hague apostille is issued by the government of the
country of origin of the document, so first you
ask for the apostille and then simply send the
scanned apostilled marriage certificate to a sworn
translator appointed by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Cooperation.
In the academic field, a Spanish student who
wants, for example, to further his or her studies
or look for a job in another EU country can
present the European Diploma Supplement. This is a
bilingual (Spanish and English) or trilingual
(Spanish, English and Catalan/Basque/Galician)
document that the university issues together with
the official university degree and which greatly
facilitates the recognition of studies abroad.
In divorce and custody cases, there are European
forms to facilitate the procedures for migrant
parents. See the annexes to Council Regulation
(EC) No. 2201/2003 of 27 November 2003 concerning
jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement
of judgments in matrimonial matters and the
matters of parental responsibility, repealing
Regulation (EC) No. 1347/2000.
Finally, I recommend that you always speak
directly with the body requesting the documents to
find out exactly what documents are required in
each case. |
