About me: Know The Facts About Hypersomnia
People have to come across many kinds of ailments,
and many of them can be extremely bothering and
can interfere greatly in your regular lifestyle.
One issue among them is the sleep disorder of
hypersomnia. The problem of hypersomnia is related
to either excessive daytime sleepiness or too much
of time spent in sleeping or person who finds it
very difficult to stay awake during the daytime.
People who are affected by this issue can sleep at
any time and anywhere. They can sleep when they
are at work or even when they are driving a car.
This problem is both irritating and also dangerous
too.
They also suffer from other sleep-related issues
such as lack of energy, concentration problem, and
trouble in thinking properly. According to the
data of the National Sleep Foundation, nearly
forty percent of people come across the symptoms
of hypersomnia from time to time.
There can be multiple reasons that cause the
potential problem of hypersomnia in a person. The
main symptoms among them are:
• Not getting adequate sleep at night
• Having sleep disorders such as narcolepsy
and sleep apnea
• Obese or overweight
• Issue of drug and alcohol abuse
• Due to some sort of head injury or a
neurological disease like multiple sclerosis or
Parkinson disease
• Depression
• Genetic issue (anyone in the family having
the same problem)
Prescribed use of any drugs or medications like
tranquilizers or antihistamines
In case you are feeling drowsy all day for a long
period constantly, then it will be better to speak
to your doctor about it. While diagnosing the
issue of hypersomnia, your doctor might ask you a
couple of questions. It will include asking about
your sleeping habits like how much do you sleep at
night, whether you stay awake at night or you feel
sleepy during the day. The doctor shall also need
information from you about any emotional issue
that you are coping with or any type of medication
that you are taking which is interfering in your
nighttime sleep.
He might suggest you to do some tests like blood
tests, CT scans and a sleep test known as
polysomnography. The doctor might also ask you to
conduct an additional electroencephalogram (EEG)
that helps in measuring the electrical activity of
the brain if it is needed. These tests will
determine the gravity of the problem, and the
doctor will decide upon the line of treatment he
will take.
If you are diagnosed with the issue of
hypersomnia, the doctor might opt for prescribing
different types of medications for treating it
which includes antidepressants, stimulants which
will help you to stay awake during the daytime. In
case your drowsiness is due to medicines that you
are taking, he may change that one which will make
you less sleepy. The doctor might also insist on
making a sleeping schedule and maintain it as
well. He might also suggest you to eliminate
alcohol and caffeine so that you have no problem
with sleeping at night. In case you have sleep
apnea, he might prescribe the treatment mode of
continuous positive airway pressure which is also
known as CPAP.
