For a total of 54 years Cuba has suffered from an economic, commercial and financial blockade from the United States -- the longest of its kind in the history of the world. The vast majority of the world's countries are in favor of ending the blockade. They have shown their support to the Cuban Government every time they have voted at the United Nations General Assembly against the United States' actions against Cuba.
For human rights activists, this blockade was created to promote hunger, illness and despair for the Cuban people.
Cuba represents an important revolutionary experience for the people of Latin America. This small Caribbean country has withstood the blockade and has kept its firm stance against the United States. The people of Cuba, with much sacrifice, support the lack of many imported products, as they fight stoically to save their cultural identity.
Because no revolution exists without the people, it is obvious that Cubans support the revolution, and the policies and political ideas of their government. About ninety percent of the Cuban population was born during the United States sanctions, and have suffered the consequences. As a result, negative sentiment against the Government of the United Sates is deeply ingrained in vast majority of Cuban people. At the same time, the Cubans feel a closeness to other Latin American countries, that have also been affected for many years by the policies of the U.S. and the neo liberalism it imposes.
The suffering created by this economic blockade has forced Cuba into a planned economy, which has strengthened their resistance to the United States financial model. The planned economy of the Cuban political organization has been the key to its success, in the improvement of social conditions and in the progression of the revolution.
