Early civilizations came from Russia into America by crossing the Bering Strait. They spread over North and South America forming cultural tribes. We refer to these original inhabitants of America as Native Americans.
Many, many, many years later, in the late 1400’s, explorers from Europe began journeying to the Americas. Europeans wanted to find an easy sailing route to Asia, so that they could trade spices and gold. in 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain and sailed across the sea. When he hit land, he thought that he was in India. He called the people there “Indiansâ€. He really had landed somewhere near the Bahamas. He called this land the New World. And so began the race against European countries to form colonies in America. Colonization is the process of establishing ownership of a land by creating colonies.
